  3. Flexibility – you can install one or two units now, and more later if needed.
  4. Heating as well as cooling – even at temperatures as low as -25 degrees C (not all models).

Ductless Air Conditioner Glossary

SEER

SEER stands for seasonal energy efficiency ratio, and it’s a rating of how well your AC converts energy to cool air for your home. The higher the number, the more efficient the performance. Ductless air conditioners get some of the best SEER ratings possible.

Split System

Most air conditioners (central or ductless) are split systems. This means there are separate indoor units and outdoor units that work together to cool your home. Ductless systems are often referred to as “mini-split”.

An example of an air conditioner that is NOT a split system is a one-piece window unit.

Multi-Split System

A multi-split system has multiple indoor units and/or outdoor units that all work together. Multiple indoor units will allow independent temperature control from room to room. If you have many rooms or floors with very different cooling needs, a multi-split system is a great solution.

Heat Pump

A heat pump can be used for either heating or cooling. It works by using refrigerant to move heat either in or out of the space. The term ‘heat pump’ can be applied to a lot of systems, including your refrigerator.

Compressor

The compressor is located on the outdoor unit of your air conditioner, and it circulates the refrigerant throughout the AC system. It is one of the three main functional parts of your AC, along with the evaporator and the condenser.

The more stages your compressor has, the more efficiently it can perform. Single stages just have one speed, and are the least efficient. Two stages are more efficient, and variable stage compressors are the most efficient. They also make for a much more even temperature.
